Gary, Why is USWest purchasing 41 new 5ESS platforms? This is "old world" technology, which in your mind is going away in 2-3 years. USWest is going to spend 300 million and junk the equipment in 5 years? USWest doesn't operate this way and you are missing the point. Service providers continue to purchase the 5ESS, which is in direct conflict with your views for the next 5 years. Either USWest is wrong or you are.... The 5ESS has modular equipment, which can support the 7R/E AnyMedia rack. This backplane isn't your "old world" circuit switched technology. ILEC, PTT, etc can have circuit switched racks, wirerless equipment racks or xDSL racks, etc in the 5ESS platform. The 5ESS platform will provide a migration path to the "NEW WORLD" technology. The 5ESS will migrate providers to the multiservice platforms of tomorrow. These new 5ESS boxes will provide USWest with a migration path for the next 10-15 years. Incorporating the 7R/E technology will be a natural evolution of our existing core business, and it will allow us to offer customers Frame Relay, IP (Internet Protocol) and ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) services with the same reliability associated with traditional voice networks,'' continued Aab. ''Specifically, the 7R/E technology will allow US LEC to efficiently deliver narrowband and broadband packet access to subscribers in a bundled service offering over any type of channel, including xDSL, cable, lines, trunks, wireless, and direct IP and ATM connections. This platform puts US LEC in an excellent position to manage a smooth transparent transition from a circuit switched network to a packet switched network, and we are excited about making this breakthrough technology available to our customers. biz.yahoo.com
