They have a handgun season here because gun nuts lobbied for it. It can't do much for the deer population one way or the other. As to "conservation" efforts by hunters, they tend to be rather unbalanced. Up here, they were up in arms, so to speak, when a doe-only season was proposed for overpopulated areas. It might make sense biologically, but it just wouldn't be manly. Then there's Alaska, where the guv is always thinking of new ways to kill wolves, so there would be more elk left for the hunters.
