Sun revising plan for Java recognition

See news.com for today's story about Java and the ISO. Once again, it appears SUNW wants to make Java an "open standard" while retaining proprietary control over it, and the ISO isn't buying that double standard.

While SUNW is blaming MSFT for their troubles with ISO once again the analogies to C and C++ seem apt. If Java is truly to become a standard, SUNW will wind up with no more leverage over it than AT&T (the originators of both C and C++) has with its progeny. Obviously they know this which is why it becomes increasingly clear that SUNW has no intention of really making Java an open standard.

Hi Stew, won't bet against your 'cable modem' horse crossing the finish line first, but I'll put down a side wager that it won't be in Northern California! Nobody in the SF Bay Area agrees on anything, and if they do it doesn't last for more than hour, max. The single exception to this otherwise iron clad rule is the universal hatred and contempt for our beloved TCI.
I personally would rather pay MORE for SLOWER DSL than extend my "customer" relationship with TCI. In actuality, I will doubtless install an ECHO Dish for TV/Radio signal (thus economically indirectly voting for my beloved LOR) and then grab a DSL line at or near the $40/mo price point (which is actually currently available from PacBell if you're up for the waiting list).
There are lots of guys on the Qualcomm thread who are as enthusiastic about cable modem as you obviously are, and I'm happy for you all. My guess, having just gotten a big, fat DSL pipe at the office, is that we're all so damned happy to be off dial-up, that we're smitten with the first pretty gal to come along, if you follow my drift.
Broadband, yes. TCI, no thanks. Have a nice weekend. Mike
