Rob, in short, you're saying that the EV68 will allow Compaq to achieve a sort of Xeon-to-Celeron pricing scheme for the Alpha 21264. I can understand that.

But we still ought to compare apples-to-apples here. Merced will be competing against the top-of-the-line EV68, not the EV68 that will run at EV6 speeds (the "Celeronized" EV68). Merced is likely going to be faster than EV68 clock-for-clock, so comparing Merced to the el-cheapo EV68 isn't a valid comparison. But comparing Merced to the top-of-the-line EV68 is, because that Alpha will likely run at much higher clock speeds than Merced and thus overcome the clock-for-clock advantage that Merced will have.

I'd like to say more, but I really can't without revealing too much more about Merced, including its clock speed at its release. Let's just say that Compaq will need its top-of-the-line EV68 (and the EV7, of course) in order to compete.
