MTBF for components in a Sun box is no better than a PC

OK. You must have great contacts in the industry to have such
specialized knowledge. I will go by my own experiences
To each his own experience. I have never had to have a
Sun box repaired, except a PROM upgrade to plug in some new
devices.

My PCs need frequent care and maintanance and many have had failures
and boards replaced and the cost in annoyance and downtime was
not worth the price savings at least to me.
There ARE good PC boxes made...but they cost much more also....not
too far and occasionally even more
expensive than prices for Sun machines if you access to a good
reseller. And no, I don't have time to go prove it. I have
a day job and already this day is one where I don't deserve to
get paid for spending too much time on SI ;-)

If PCs meet your need, switch to using them and stop using
those Sun and SGIs. However it is possible there may be people
who will make different choices than you based on their need.

The whole world of computers is dynamic and products leapfrog
each other all the time. Companies with a will to compete
and a good track record of products and meeting customer needs
deserve my investment dollars, as long as the don't give up
on their successful strategy and uniqueness that got them
customers. Sun has avoided being yet-another-Wintel player
and that is fine by me. I have my gripes about Sun products,
but MTBF isn't one of them (atleast not anymore, those early
Solaris releases used to be crappy but they improved).
