>>>>>The parties are democratic institutions controlled by those who are active. The idea that "the govornment" is in charge of parties is ridiculous.<<<<<

There is a feedback mechanism. At the national level, the parties take instruction from the powers that be in the federal government, like the president, and his advisors, but it's on a party basis, of course. Same thing with the state parties, they take instruction from the governor, the senators, and so on. Because the power flows both ways. The juice.

nihil,
I went back and reread my post. I don't see where I suggested that the government controls the parties. Of course they don't. I know how it works. I personally think that neither party controls the government either, but that they, the bureaucracy, and a select group of special interests have the control together. But they don't have complete control as the government is an out of control juggernaut which they are all attempting to steer. Ultimately it's what some refer to as the "eastern establishment" that has the control. They do that by controlling key Republicans, Democrats, bureaucrats. They have a death grip on th State Dept., Treasury, and other parts of the Executive Branch. They have extensive inroads in the Judicial Branch as well. So it's all a hoax that we have a big say. We get to choose between the different candidates that they run for us. So chew on that and see what insults you can come back with this time.
