Nihil, while you are limiting yourself to the simplicity of English history, do make some feeble attempt at factuality. Was the marriage to Catherine of Aragon illegal? Only if she and Arthur consummated their union, as she maintained they did not because of his ill health. As for the prohibited degree of relationship, what complicated the issue was that dispensation had already been received from Rome before the marriage.

Anne Boleyn did, in fact, have relations with Henry before their marriage. Her pregnancy provided the impetus for speed. Moreover, the adultery issue really concerned purported relations with men prior to her marriage with Henry.

Tuchman's contention, re the reformation, is that the actions of a series of Renaissance popes actively provoked the reformation, and that the popes continued these actions despite abundant evidence that they were steering the church toward a destructive schism. Hence folly: "the deliberate, conscious, pursuit of policy contrary to self-interest".

Have you read the book? It is excellent.

A couple of days ago I asked what caused the Protestant Reformation. I was told that it was not a spiritual movement, but was started by kings for temporal reasons.. I don't consider myself to be an expert on the history of religion, but here are some facts which may be of interest.

The oldest Protestant church, the Moravian, was founded by followers of John Huss, who was executed for heresy in 1415.

Martin Luther posted his 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg in 1517.

Zwingli's first Protestant treatise, against fasting during Lent, was published in 1519.

Meanwhile, over in England, Henry VIII wrote a treatise against Lutheranism, for which the Pope gave him the title "Defender of the Faith." Henry VIII founded the Church of England in the 1530's.
