I share your disdain for Yahoo's seeming policy of not wanting to announce a deal with Checkfree for Ebill service until it is almost up-and-running while they have no compunction in making an offhand comment seeming to establish an interest in the whole company -- very inconsistent.
The only ways the latter rumor make sense are: (1) as a threat to management to get on with Yahoo's ebill enablement pronto or face a hostile takeover; (2) as a trial balloon to generate interest in a takeover by some of the larger holders (Integrion, Intuit and some of the mutual funds) after already being rebuffed by management; (3) a preemptive move to establish an interest ahead of AOL or AMZN; (4) as a spur to take out Integrion and/or Intuit's interest in CKFR.
Although I'm with the group which would likely refuse to tender to a hostile offeror, this doesn't mean the stock would go much below or stay far below the offering price. It may be a case of having cake and eating too -- a hostile bid would highlight the unique value, wake up many institutional investors who barely know the company exists, and put the company in permanent play -- all good things. The shares could remain near or even above the takeover offer price. Of course if none of this comes to pass, those who have studied the opportunity here will IMHO be big beneficiaries of Checkfree's stranglehold on this burgeoning business.
