Dave, in addition to barriers, branding plays a role here. I'm beginning to wonder however the true purpose of the advertizing. Is it to sell stock or develope a brand/service that will be profitable. You see the brands come and go as you point out if they don't develope a unique element to their product or distribution. I think the purpose of PCLN, AMZN and EBAY's advertizing has more to do with selling stock, under the guise of course of developing a brand.
If you are a investor in one of these companies or hold a position (long) such thoughts are nonsense. Greed (and perhaps stupidity)are more powerful forces than some of the other human characteristics we possess

I respectfully disagree...there are a handful which do own proprietary technology, such as BRCM, AWRE, ATHM and INKT. This is what I am talking about, not branding issues with no barriers. I could add several networkers ad nauseum and Fed Ex, but won't as they are not as pure. Regards
