The purpose of 99% of internet companies who go public is to sell stock, not to make a profit. This is why when it all ends, a lot of people are going to jail. In Canada there is a law regarding their securities industry that makes it a crime to found a company that has no intention of profitability, and list it on the vancouver exchange. (In order to scam the public, launder money, etc)

I'm beginning to wonder however the true purpose of the advertising. Is it to sell stock or develop a brand/service that will be profitable.

Probably an element of both there Mad. I truly believe the advertisements at in least in part are to gain customers. With both Amazon and Yahoo, you have to admit that almost everybody has heard of them and a large number of people have used them. Personally, I've checked out the Amazon site, but buy whatever books I do from either the Book of the Month Club or Barnes and Noble. I use Yahoo, but primarily for the message boards and following some of my stocks. Never bought anything there.
