Daniel, no one can afford to overlook a potential rival stealing important military secrets, and it is inevitable not that we be enemies with China, but that there be friction in the Pacific Rim over our role in countering growing Chinese assertiveness. We are acting as a "proxy" for Japan, just as we are in NATO partially because no on yet trusts Germany. Under normal conditions, Germany would counterbalance Russia, and Japan would counterbalance China, and the other nations of each region would maneuver between the dominant powers for advantage, and thus bids for hegemony would be rare and pretty futile. Since there is still a great deal of distrust and hostility towards Germany and Japan among their neighbors, the United States ensures the balance of power, and thus hopes to ensure the peace, since it has a stake in each direction as a large trading nation, and due to the inevitable stirring of passions among the citizenry as the lands of their ancestors get caught up in turmoil...
