<<a good place to visit in AK if you don't like touristas?>> Take the ferry from Bellingham or Prince Rupert. You'll see the countryside in Southeast Alaska all the way to Skagway. Stops along the way are a few hours and you can get off to walk around or take a cab if it's daylight. It's a transportation system, not a tour company, so don't expect deluxe. You can pitch a tent in the solarium if you don't want to pay for a stateroom. Also, you have to plan well in advance if you are bringing a car, which costs about $600. Petersburg is a fishing town with Norwegian roots. Stay at the Nordic House B & B. If you want more details I'll send them to your Email address.
