Martin Luther: Did He or Didn't He? I vote with you, Blue, provisionally at least.

The web is by no means the place to ascertain the truth about whether Luther actually nailed the Theses to the door of the Castle Church or not. But I nevertheless think that it is of note that all but one of the sources a google.com web search produced (another plug for my absolute favorite search engine) speak of Luther's posting on the church door as a fact. The one that does NOT says that the matter "is in some dispute among historians." What I would deduce from that is that the matter is not settled.

Then, turning to my admittedly outdated encyclopedia, I find a scholarly (replete with lengthy bibliography) entry on Luther, with the following sentence: "The arrival of Johann Tetzel in Saxony in 1517 prompted Luther to post his historic 95 theses on the door of the castle church."

Now, Christopher, you will have to produce some citation in support of your contention that the Great Nailing is only a legend! Surely, you are not going to tell us that Martin Luther did not march up there with his trusty little hammer (or whatever it is you use to nail a bunch of theses to a church door) and proclaim:

Hier stehe ich, ich kann nicht anders!

Boo hoo, don't debunk everything! (Not that it makes the slightest difference to the point Blue was originally trying to make. Talk about diversionary actions!)

Joan

P.S. Now I really am going to bed!
