I am not important or influential enough to be a leader, but I would venture to say that I have been exposed to more influences, and subjected myself to more honest debate, and analyzed my own positions more thoroughly, than you ever will, my friend. I subscribe to The New Republic and the New York Review of Books, for example. Do you subscribe to National Review and Commentary? I worked in the McGovern campaign. Did you work in the Reagan campaign? I have read as much on political philosophy and history as I could manage, from Plato to Aquinas, Hobbes to Rousseau,John Stuart Mill to Karl Marx...how about you?

Daniel, you may not be able to understand this, but I have primarily lived my life so that I could read, think, and write, with the hope that one day it would all amount to something, and I will have not only pleased myself, but made a substantial contribution. I have done my best to correct my mistakes and develop my understanding, and I have wrestled with many large questions in ways that most people do not bother. To me, most people are extremely ignorant and very shallow, but that is okay, I understand that it is not given to all to pursue my agenda, and that the world is surer that it needs doctors, lawyers, software engineers, car mechanics, and plumbers than that it needs guys like me. I understand that you need to find ways to denigrate me, because it is unsettling that I don't fit your stereotype of a conservative, and that is a large part of the reason I have been patient with you. Since I must be wrong, there must be something wrong with me! Okay...But you know in your heart that it is not that easy...
