Here's the latest MSFT-related change in the MarketWatch story on the UMG deal, which also reports an uncomfirmed rumor from CNBC that AOL has dropped out of the deal:

If AOL is out of the picture, Microsoft (MSFT: news, msgs) could still come to Comcast's rescue. The company recently bought a $1 billion stake in Comcast and would like to protect its investment. It also wants to ensure that a "friendly" company owns MediaOne so the software giant can sell it the software to run the new cable boxes expected to control television sets.

Yet the company is also talking to AT&T about a software deal, and there's speculation that it's using the Comcast situation to gain leverage with Ma Bell over a set-top software contract. Microsoft wants to ensure that software of archrival Sun Microsystems is not chosen instead.
