GeoCities Exceeds 10 Terabytes of MTI Storage To Support World's Largest Community of Personal Web Sites MTI Storage Solutions House More Than 35 Million Pages of Web Content for More Than 4 Million GeoCities Members
ANAHEIM, Calif., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- MTI Technology Corp. (Nasdaq: MTIC - news) announced that GeoCities (Nasdaq: GCTY - news), the world's largest and one of the fastest growing communities of personal Web pages, has expanded its installed base of MTI storage to more than 10 terabytes.

GeoCities, which has a community of more than 4 million members, has employed MTI's StorageWare storage solutions since GeoCities' inception in 1996. MTI's storage solutions support GeoCities' community-based Web site that generates more than 1.8 billion page views per month and registers more than 14,000 new members each day. The company is best known for providing its members with 11 MB of free disk space and free use of its online Web page publishing tool, GeoBuilder, to build rich and dynamic personal Web pages.

GeoCities, which pioneered the concept of the large-scale, Web-based community, operates an online service that requires maximum uptime, high- performance and flexible, scalable options for expanding storage capacity. GeoCities' MTI storage installation is configured with 350 Sun Microsystems servers running Sun's Solaris operating system and Apache Web software.

MTI StorageWare products provide storage on demand for GeoCities, allowing the company to easily add capacity to support its rapidly growing user base. GeoCities is currently installing new capacity at a rate of 100 gigabytes per week. MTI also has entered into a professional services contract to manage GeoCities' IT infrastructure, including installation and maintenance of Sun servers, backup systems and storage. The GeoCities facility, located in Santa Clara, Calif., has more than 200 MTI StorageWare systems with a total capacity of more than 10 terabytes.

''GeoCities is committed to offering a content-rich Internet environment that can accommodate its millions of users and visitors,'' said John Rezner, chief technology officer and co-founder of GeoCities. ''The sheer volume of text, graphics, video and audio will demand an increasing storage capacity that offers speed and performance required by new service features and capabilities.''

GeoCities members create Web pages that are stored in one of 41 virtual- themed communities called neighborhoods. These neighborhoods allow people of similar interests to share ideas, exchange information, hold community forums, chat and shop. The community-oriented Web pages built by members are visited by more than 21 million unique visitors from around the world each month. Members of GeoCities have the option to increase Web storage space from 11 MB to 25 MB through GeoPlus, a GeoCities premium service.

GeoCities recently announced a new service called GeoMedia, an offering that gives members the ability to easily create and publish streaming audio and video content on their personal Web pages. The service also provides members with 5 MB of streaming media and free tools that make it easy to create rich and dynamic multimedia Web pages.

''The Internet market today represents a significant growth opportunity for companies such as MTI that offer continuous access to online information with high-availability data storage solutions,'' said Tom Raimondi, MTI's chief operating officer. ''As more businesses implement e-commerce applications and Internet use continues to expand with multimedia-rich content, Internet-based companies need storage solutions that can eliminate downtime in a 24x7 world, give them the performance necessary to serve high-volume Internet requests and also scale as their business continues to grow.''
