as I recall there was a pretty large gas explosion in New Jersey a few years ago that was traced directly to a pipeline.

You might be referring to the Texas City disaster in 1947. Link below. Ship blew up and exploding debris caused various chemical and gas plants located in the city to explode. Saw a movie of this mess 45 years ago and still have not forgotten it.
