YUP, you just proved that you are well out of touch. That you havent kept in touch with NOVL since 1994 is the biggest sign. Now lets point out a few things you have stated... Unlike what MSFT wants the world to believe, NT still DOES NOT have some of the basic file/print funtions that NetWare has had for 10 years! One perfect example. MSFT is bragging that Windows2000 will have a great new feature called Disk Quotas by user - WOW! A NetWare feature from the '80s James (even you should know that). And then there is the straight out performance issue. Even if NT had all the basic file/print features of NetWare (which it doesnt), it still needs 3 to 5 times the computer horse-power to equal 1 NetWare server. Lets get into LDAP. Just to show you that you dont know your topic, LDAP IS NOT a Directory Service! It is simply a protocol that Directory Services - LIKE NDS - can use to publish their data to clients that query the DS. In the case of Netscape - they use it as an internal protocol which has its own greif since it is still such a limited protocol. So I will agree that a lot of work is going into LDAP integration - including NOVL and its NDS who has an LDAP-NDS plugin and NDSv8 will provide natively incorporated LDAP, BUT, that does not have anything to do with which Directory Service Vendor has the largest and fastest growing market-share - NDS with no close second (approximately has 45 million NDS nodes in the market). As for your point on JNDI, who the hell do you think developed JNDI for Javasoft? NOVELL!!! Research information before you put your foot into your mouth. JNDI was Novell's contribution to ensure that Java becomes successful. Since they are the undisputed experts in DS, they felt that was their best contribution to promote Java. Novell is also heading up the next generation of LDAP which is LDUP (a major component of LDAP that is currently missing which allows Directory Services to replicate information amoung each other - this is currently not possible with LDAP - BIG LIMITATION). On the Unix side, NOVL has vendor commitments and has also integrated NDS for Solaris, Unixware, Redhat Linux, and AIX. this is not to mention other platforms like OS/390, Lucent and Nortel Switches, Firewalls, Radius, SNA Gateways, ERP vendors like Peoplesoft, etc. Sun's NIS will be an also-ran in the DS market and will be used for niche solutions within strong Sun shops. It will not be a big DS outside of these environments. As for Novell's development environment, you might want to research that as well. NetWare 5 can now have applications run on it that are written in NLM, Java, VB, NetBasic, Perl Scripts, etc. In fact, NetWare 5 has been tested as the fastest Java VM on the market, so blow the dust off your experience and maybe you'll find out the Novell you knew 5 years ago has changed drastically! Anything else you would like to add James? Toy
