LSI Logic Collaborates With Compaq to Deploy Industry's First PCI RAID on A Chip(TM) Solution LSI Logic's Standard PCI RAID Controller Provides Increased Level Of Integration and Maximum Data Protection for Compaq's Powerful ProLiant Server Models MILPITAS, Calif., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) will deploy the industry's first PCI RAID on a Chip solution. As a result of a collaborative development effort between the two companies, Compaq, a co-development partner with LSI Logic on the definition and development of the single-chip RAID controller, will integrate LSI Logic's PCI RAID controllers directly onto the motherboard on some Compaq ProLiant server models, coming to market later this year. LSI Logic's PCI RAID controller, the Symbios(R) SYM53C1510, improves central processing unit (CPU) utilization and improves I/O efficiency, data integrity and recovery. Overall, system reliability is enhanced by combining seven to eight discrete components and connections into a single IC using a single memory system. This level of integration enables OEMs to reduce their costs by integrating RAID directly onto the motherboard as an every-unit item. "The development of a single-chip PCI RAID is ideal for data center servers where internal storage is optimized for operating systems and swap space, while more powerful array controllers or large subsystems are used for the data store," said Paul Santeler, Vice President, Enterprise Server Segment, Industry-Standard Server Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Working with LSI Logic on the development of this new technology gives Compaq a competitive advantage in that we are able to provide our customers with leadership solutions for their critical computing environments," added Santeler. "Being first to market with a standard PCI RAID on a Chip solution is a vivid example of our leadership in SCSI I/O technology," said Bill Wuertz, LSI Logic's vice president and general manager of the Storage Components group. "LSI Logic is gratified to work with Compaq in driving the industry standards and enabling low-cost RAID." "Compaq's integration of LSI Logic's cutting edge PCI RAID controller directly onto the motherboard represents a step forward in RAID solutions," said Robert Gray, a research analyst with International Data Corporation (IDC). "RAID technology is the standard for ensuring data availability and reliability in standard high volume servers." LSI Logic is ranked one of the top three suppliers of PCI RAID components, with over 75% of the world's market, according to a recent RAID report.* IDC estimates that more than 84% of server disk-based storage sales will be RAID-based technology by the year 2000. Compaq's powerful new ProLiant server models will feature an 8-way architecture, offering customers a choice for their data center implementations. The advanced, standards-based product offerings will provide data center customers with increased performance and cost-effective solutions without requiring modifications or special releases of operating systems and applications. Pricing, model details and availability for Compaq's new server models are expected to become generally available later this year.
