Wrong about the ferry types. There are some touristas, it's true, but most of the people are Alaskans going to visit or coming home. You can stop at Wrangell and buy a garnet the size of a marble for about $3.00.
Here's another plan: Try the Cassiar Highway through Canada. Accommodations are scarce and spartan, but you can camp or find a few motels. It's lovely. If you don't like people, this is the place. Keep on going through Dawson City, cross the Yukon and drive into Alaska.
We have a motel 8 here, and some bigger hotels. Don't bother with Anchorage. It's the biggest city 5 minutes outside Alaska. Fairbanks, I've never been to. If you go to Barrow bring money and warm clothes.
