I like your emphasis on free cash flow. Another indicator I try to follow closely, as encouraged by NAIC, is quarter-over-quarter pre-tax earnings. (Pre tax so you see what the company does, not what the government does to them.) When that starts dropping, it's often time to run for the exits. You can often spot trouble there before it shows up elsewhere.
