"Interesting to [see] Esprey of Sprint discuss ION today on CNBC."

lml,
I saw the interview also. When asked how he plans to gain access to the home, he replied; fixed wireless and DSL. Well DSL means piggy backing on the Baby Bells twisted copper pair. A good follow-up question would have been, "You don't have FCC permission to connect your long distance backbone directly to the home. What exactly are you DSL plans again?"

Since AOL has been shut out of the cable deals, isn't there some kind of writing on the wall concerning AOL, AT&Ts long distance competitors, and the Baby Bells getting together to compete with T's cable plans? Really this is not a new alternative, but one the FCC may be more prone to let happen nowadays.

There was another article in today's WSJ that even mentioned that AT&T will be most eager to get the local telephone revenues stream going quickly because AT&T foresees some Bells taking away their long distance business in the not to distant future.

PS For those who are interested in the ability to deliver video over the twisted copper pair, I did a post on GTE's VDSL trial a couple of months back and there was some interesting follow-up commentary to it from others. It's at the bottom of this post:

lml, interesting note on BLS, they are installing HLIT's MetroDWDM system. I talked with an engineer from South Florida the other day,and he said they are dropping fiber optic cable underneath I-95 in South Florida right now. He said they are planning massive FTTC installations in South Florida. They must be since they are installing MetroDWDM systems from HLIT.
BLS is the most aggressive of the RBOC's,they are going balls to the wall to install fiber optics. VDSL cannot be too far away from where they are right now.
