Oh come now. No one and I mean no one can go back to 66 MHZ processors. Even people who only use a computer for word processing won't do it. The low end of the Net is barely tolerable and is tolerated only because there is no alternative.

In 1995 I thought AOL would do very well. Not as well as it has as a stock or in subscribers. I thought the other ISPs would have gotten a much larger chunk of the pie. AOL pulled off a giant mailing software floppy disk deluge ad campaign that was the most successful such move ever undertaken. They got a big bite right off the top. Given how bad their service was relative to their competitors, you could only conclude that it is testament to the fact that people don't investigate before they buy. They don't need to. It doesn't matter. There's not enough consequence to fail. We have a throw-away society, so why should anyone be concerned about quality of product? I had AOL and threw them away because I guessed anything would be better. I was right. Everything was better. 17 million people are habituated to mediocrity, but the alternatives are not sufficiently compelling with the exception of cable. You have heard many testify on this thread that when they tried or saw cable delivery, they renounced AOL immediately. End of argument.

This isn't a matter of wisdom. It's common sense. They won't go back to horse and buggy, telegraph, or AOL.
