Patrick,

We lived just north of Cliften between Letterfrack and Tulleycross.
Can't remember the name of the salmon river, but it drained a peat bog and some local mountains....we were fairly close to the ocean. We saw the fall salmon run. Rented an old thatched roof fishing cottage that belonged to the head of Canamara Marble Co. I was writing at the time.....a philosophical work on religious identity and my wife was water coloring. We lived their for 6 months and took excursions all over Ireland.

We got to know many of the neighbors who were mostly poor living in dirt floored cottages with chickens that wandered in and out. Small farms with a few livestock and planted fields. We wanted to spend some time in a foreign country among people of another culture, living very different lives.....we accomplished that and much more.

My wife Barbara got to know a few locals fairly well....especially this 75 year old window called Lizie McCaughlin. Lizie would come to tea and bring us eggs and we'd sing....she of course knew by heart song after song after song....and with her sister they'd sing acappella for hours. Great fun.

Catholic churchs there were bathed in the Virgin Mary....they never mentioned Christ, just as an off to the side. Saw the Connamara Pony show, Arian Islands and most of Ireland. Funny thing......I'm Scottish, English and French Huguenot, my wife is French and Dutch....wonder why we went to Ireland?

My Best
Chip
