when I need to restore, say the C: image file, should I automatically restore the E: (your reference D:) as well even if not needed?

I do not have a definitive answer. It depends on how integrated the drives are. If you make changes (install new software) to the SCSI drive via the 'C' drive then the answer is yes, you should backup/restore the drives at the same time.

IMO the easy answer is you need a complete simultaneous backup of all 'linked' drives. The difficult answer is you may not need to do a complete simultaneous backup but you need a thorough understanding of the system to make a differentiated choice.

Spots has also recommended making a copy of the new C: install including critical apps to run in event of a prolonged down time.

It sounds good to me. Other NT users have suggested similar strategies. I would want it on the 'C' drive. I will be following the discussion. I am still unclear on the details..just a second NT in a separate directory on the C: drive with a selection of useful apps? It sounds like the first line of defense. Can it be copied from the primary install using NT Explorer or does it require an install from CD? Are apps installed twice? in separate directories?

I still like mowa's removable drive concepts. I did something similar at work. I need a 'clean' NT machine that is maintained 'by others'. I also need a machine that boots win95/DOS. The 'others' do not want to see Win95/DOS. The removable drive works great. All I do is swap in the Win95/DOS drive and I have a complete new machine. One OS cannot influence another if the OS is sitting on a shelf.

A complete backup of the first drive..sitting on a shelf has some appeal to me.(not suggesting in lieu of the second NT install on the C drive) The problem is there are a lot of good ideas and as Spots has indicated before there is a cost..how many drives do we want kicking around and how do we maintain them?

Just rambling on here...

You must really be cranking out those corbels

Still working on the first design. About two more weeks....working on some final details.
