Dear Don;

Thank you for your kind words. I must agree with you that the first chapter of Colossians is a good place to begin our study of the nature of Messiah Yeshua. May we look at the two verses you quoted as well as four additional(Col 1:15-20)?

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities -- all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

I believe we agree this passage refers to Yeshua, "the image of the invisible God." Yeshua himself supports this idea in John 14:9, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father;..." When Paul tells us Yeshua is the "first born of all creation" he is referring to Yeshua's role as Savior, a role you yourself have attributed to Him. His very name Yeshua in Hebrew means YHWH is salvation.

When you wrote to me <<Jesus is the Only Begotten Son of God, our King, my personal saviour whose blood shed at Calvary>> you were affirming that Yeshua is YHWH or Jehovah. Psalm 3:8 Salvation belongs to the LORD (YHWH); Your blessing be upon Your people!

The passage also clearly teaches that Yeshua was an agent of creation itself, creating all things visible and invisible. "all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." Yet we are told in Psalm 102:25 that YHWH created the earth. "Of old You founded the earth, And the heavens are the work of Your hands." Yeshua is YHWH.

Our text goes on to say that "it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him" Col 2:9 affirms this idea, "For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form". This is the sense that Yeshua is the firstborn of creation. The incarnation was a new thing, the fullness of YHWH was now dwelling among man and reconciling him to a loving God.

These verses in Colossians were first used by Arius in AD325 in an attempt to show that Yeshua was a created being. This idea was rejected at the council of Nicaea. It was rejected because Yeshua is eternal with the Father. YHWH is eternal, Isa 48:12 Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. The Revelation of Yeshua is clear on this point. Rev 1:8 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." As you shared earlier <<the Messiah is 'El Gib-bohr', Mighty God, not 'El Shaddai', God Almighty>> Yet Yeshua claims the same title as the Almighty in Rev. 2:8 "The first and the last, who was dead and has come to life, says this:"

Yeshua is YHWH, the first and the last, the creator of man and angels. Like Thomas I can only look and say, "My Lord and My God! I pray that some day you will be able to do the same.
