The Right to Hate! I think its pretty clear that hate is bad for the hater. It produces neurotransmitters that reduce impulse inhibition and leads to unpleasant facial expressions that stimulate anger and aggression. We have had a number of killings out here prompted by some one giving another "the stink eye." Mostly it is the stink eyer getting killed. We recently had a trial where the judge permitted about 20 friends of the defendant to stare at the plaintiff's witnesses on the stand (the defendant was convicted any way.) I once knew a boy who was imprisoned by the Marine Corps for "silent contempt!" I think the Columbine trenchcoat kids felt that they were hated by the jocks. I think it is growing clear that one may have the right to hate but not the right to express that hate. This means that to stay out of jail, we must all learn to mask our hate or be prepared to defend it rationally. Expressing hate in an armed society like ours can be interpreted as a kind of non-verbal assault. Something on the order of soliciting a fight or inciting a breach of the peace. Dear X, I hope you don't let your dislike of the lower (or higher) orders fill your life with hate or rot your synapses. We can only emotionally afford a very little hate. I prefer to save and dispense mine for people who really need and deserve my hate.
