George - With large and powerful companies with huge patent portfolios, the explicit intellectual property is never decisive.

Wow, an occasion where I'm more bullish on Qualcomm than you. Although I agree that your statement is generally true, I guarantee it is not always true (the most famous case being Ma Bell), and I believe it is to a large degree untrue in this case. Qualcomm's mobile cell CDMA patent portfolio isn't more numerous than everyone else's, but it is more basic and broader. Golden Bridge's assertion that they can bypass Qualcomm's patents is almost certainly hooey, although they would be foolish to say otherwise at this point.

Having said that, I agree that there is a lot more to Qualcomm than its patent portfolio, and given that they have decided to license their patents already, the patent portfolio is largely a moot issue (except for those who have not yet acknowledged Qualcomm). A more uncertain, and hence interesting, issue is Qualcomm's dominance of the ASIC market and that dominance will be driven by the 'tacit knowledge' within Qualcomm, not by its patents.

Nokia or Ericy? Nokia bought licences from Q! about 1991. Ericy not until 1999. I've never seen Nokia call CDMA a scam and it conflicts with their purchase of licences.

You said: //Same with AT&T cellular, which has maintained for ten years that CDMA violates the laws of physics, and Nokia, which harassed me repeatedly about the "scam" of CDMA. You can believe that they can turn around and do a better job than Qualcomm now.//

Could someone please point us to Foveon's web site (analog VLSI)? I wasn't able to find it doing a search on Yahoo.

To Mr. Gilder or whomever else is brave enough to hazard a guess,

From the end users perspective, in terms of cost and speed, what are the advantages and disadvantages of wireless Internet access when compared to cable modem Internet access? By 2004, what is your best guess as to the percentage of Internet access that will be wireless vs. cable modem vs. telephone?

Thanks,
Chris
