Thank you, Steven. That is exactly the point I was trying to make! People who do not temper their world views against the body of empirical knowledge are doomed to defending their arguments with semantic tricks and facile one-liners.

Question: is Terrence capable of arguing from any other perspective? I must admit that I espouse libertarian ideals myself, but I thought Chuzzlewit's criticisms were well-taken. I would have been interested in a reasoned debate.

I use one-liners because they amuse me. Whether they amuse anyone else is no concern of mine.

The shithole society you see America becoming today has as its root cause the creeping sickness of "moral grayness" -- nothing is black and white -- nothing is truly right or wrong, and words can mean almost anything you want them to. Tribes rule, individuals lose rights. This is what we see happening today. Gangs proliferate and kids get guns and take warfare to their high schools.

I say there are absolute rights and wrongs. There is objective morality. When people lose sight of this it is the beginning of the end of their freedom.
