Frank, triage is always better than leaving the patient to the fate of misinformation. I am easily lost or led astray by well intentioned, but inaccurate info which is in your area of expertise. If you don't respond or dissect the errors here they could be perpetuated to a badend. Thanks for your concern, I look forward to your editorial clarifications. lnk

re: Does anyone see the merit to my taking such measures, or shall I simply enumerate where it is that I see the need for triage?

You can do what you want, but please continue to point out anyones misunderstandings.

Frank, As you know, I have been trying to educate myself in these areas. I see the misinformation you refer to on this and other threads, however I lack the background to properly bebunk. Unfortunately so much of it is directed to the uninitiated. I have no objection to the truth, regardless of how it cuts.

Yes, please do!!! Sometimes when I'm in a hurry I just look at the Yahoo thread, since it's my home page, and the majority of the people who write there aren't ethical in the least. I count on getting more of the truth here at SI. Thanks for your effort, it's much appreciated!!

Frank,

You have earned our respect here with your insight and objectivity -- and perhaps most of all the professional manner in which you set forth your thoughts. Go ahead and post away; I trust the thread has enough sense to cut you whatever slack you need.

FC,

I concur with all who have said with a resounding "YES", edit away. Please keep up the great and informative posts.....incorrect information is worse than no information at all!!!!!!!

Hmm... While I think it would be great if you used a reply message to correct misinformation posted in prior messages, I would find it highly inappropriate if you or anyone else were allowed to edit a previous post.

While the problems of authority in any board such as this are significant, and while it might be useful to have a board such as this with some kind of authoritative peer-review process, I think it would be inappropriate to install that kind of thing after the fact on this particular board.

request the webmistress provide me with editing rights

I agree with RTev on this. Posting to correct misinformation is great, but I wouldn't like to see editing of prior messages. It would reduce my trust in what I read on SI. There are lots of folks who have a particular agenda when posting. I'm not saying you would do this, but if a number of people are allowed to edit messages on different threads, I'll start wondering if facts or legitimate opinions are being replaced with something else that better fits a different agenda.

Don't do it Frank...

Although I have never posted to this board I frequently read it and find it one of my favorites. In fact, you are one of the most knowledgeable posters here and your thoughts are appreciated by many. It would be great if you went back and posted about some of the misinformation that you see, but I would have to ask you if you think that it would be the best thing for your family. What is more important in the long run correcting 'vague representations' or reading the kids a story.

Please don't be offended by this. I mean no harm. My kids are 12 and 14 now and I have them around for 4 and 6 years then that's it. Who knows, they might stay longer? But when I think about it that means just 4 more summers with my oldest. The other day my youngest said, "dad, you are always sitting at the computer". That was just an observation on his part, but it got me to thinking...
