Lorne, oh and you too TV (Click, Click): Just pause for a minute all and really think about it! First, TV take your WSP hype and anti ABZ hype and shove it, cause whether you like it or not, some of us know who you are and where you are coming from. Unfortunately the reality of the situation tends to escape most persons who are not close to the process. Oh yeah, you can spec on the prices of the various stocks all you want, of course that is what the game is mostly about. What most people just do not have the faintest clue about is the political, social and regulatory realities of the situation here in the north when they are spec'ing the various stocks. WSP could have chunkers the size of your fist every ton or two, so friggin what. Whoppie frigging ding! They'll still have to get in line for the regulatory process, which means that regardless of what the tonnage and grade they may eventually end up with it will be a while and many $ before they go into production, regardless of the individual circumstances they may have that are conducive to mining. What many investors and the general public out there don't realize is the trench warfare that is going on here in the north and elsewhere in Canada and the States in order to actually BUILD and DEVELOP the found mineral wealth of the continent. While many of you out there are busy figgerin' out how you can make a buck off the natural non-renewable resource market, many of us at the grass roots level are struggling hard just to keep it alive. Involvement at that level provides one with insights that most persons just won't get, nor if known, will be generally broadcast in the market. Previous posts on this thread ranging from the Canacrap "rec to buy" to judicial decisions regarding the "Cumulative Effects" regarding the Cheviot Mine are all too terribly relevant to the situation here in the north vis a vis the next diamond mine to come into production. I will state unequivocally for a fact that the Diavik project WILL be the next or there will be none. What really gets my dander up is sleazebag hypesters like TV, who, not having the intestinal fortitude too show their true colors, coming on and posting crap without having a clue nor any regard for the reality of the circumstances. And Si'er wonder why I, and other northerners don't bother to post much anymore. Keep up the good work and the faith Lorne. And George when you visit, may the force stay with you, it will prevail! Diplomatic approach to diamonds GNWT trying to negotiate solution to value-added dilemma Richard Gleeson Northern News Services NNSL (May 17/99) - The territorial government appears resigned to negotiating with Diavik rather than arguing with the federal government. Minister of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development Stephen Kakfwi last week said he is determined to negotiate a settlement of the secondary diamond issue. Three weeks ago Kakfwi's deputy minister publicly criticized Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development's refusal to address secondary diamond industries in its environmental review of the proposed Diavik Diamond mine. "I think one of the prerequisites for doing good business is having a good relationship with everyone involved," said Kakfwi on Thursday, "and we are very involved, as the elected representatives of the people of the Northwest Territories." Kakfwi would not say whether or not the government is considering using the threat of exorbitant taxation, as it did when negotiating with BHP, to bolster it's bargaining position. "If Diavik thinks just taking the diamonds is good business, we have a major difference to overcome," said Kakfwi. Responding to questions from Yellowknife Centre MLA Jake Ootes earlier in the week, Kakfwi said he and his officials are currently attempting to negotiate a socio-economic agreement with the company. The minister said formal negotiations of the agreement began "a few months ago." Kakfwi noted Diavik has said it had no objection to selling rough diamonds to Northern manufacturers as long as it made good business sense. Hay River Mayor Jack Rowe said the value-added dispute has served to highlight the need for the North to take control of its resources. Rowe said his understanding is that the federal government's reluctance to compel Diavik to provide rough diamonds to Northern-based cutting, sorting and polishing companies is because it may violate international trade agreements they have signed. "If this was a provincial government, they could consider those options because they are not signatories to those agreements," said Rowe. Rowe said the standard for negotiation was set last year, when BHP agreed to sell 7,500 carats of diamonds a month to Northern companies. A Northern Accord, said Rowe, would benefit both the territories and the companies who hope to do business here by defining clearly the rules, and the costs, of doing business in the North.
