Scott,

I will also be watching the STB applications area VERY hard for emerging Gorilladom. IATV, GMST, TVGIA???

I also have been watching this area for a few years now and was preparing an argument for Gemstar this weekend but I believe it is a bit premature (Geez Mike, you have me agreeing with you.) and additional time for resolution of the IPR issues is needed for better clarity.

Any ideas on STB(Set Top Box)/interactive TV applications potential Gorillas?

The FCC recently called STBs an unnatural invasion upon consumers and I agree wholeheartedly. When the FCC mandate becomes effective next year you will see STB functionality built into combination devices by the likes of Matsushita, Sony, Thomson, Philips and the rest. Everything that a conversion box does can now be put on a chip or two and be built into TV's, VCR's, game players and digital recording devices. That's how I see matters evolving once the security features are separated from the proprietary ones. Cable is still dragging their feet with CE OEMs concerning POD agreement and I have heard that products may not be on the retail floors until a few months after the 7-1-00 effective date although the reality is inevitable.

Regards
Stew

scott, regarding ATHM vs DSL.

1) ATHM will be the Gorilla in the cable HFC broadband arena. I made no assertion with respect to the DSL market.

2) With respect to GMST: I expect ATHM (with T and MSFT behind it) at some point will merge/consolidate with this entity (or one similar to it) so that ATHM will be the seemless interface for the consumer. I have no idea whether this business will still be called ATHM, T, or something else, but ATHM will be the vehicle.

3) DSL will be late to market and limited in its initial deployment. The RBOCs couldn't act quickly if their lives depended on it (and they do).
