I like glads because they were so showy and they could be kept going for several weeks. Sad to say my glad guy died. He was really neat. Used bailing twine for a belt and carried a cell phone.

only full shade shrubs i know of is the viburnums and hydrangea

late summer bloomers, not many
blooming into late summer

vinca
cyclamen
liriope
some hostas

you might want to go for colorful autumn foliage instead

shrub, euonymus, outstanding red
shrub, cotoneaster, burnt orange
boston ivy, turns scarlet

Joan, Washington Post has a nice gardening guide for local area, you can get it from the library (maybe), or buy it right now at a discount at Costco, or pay full price at Border's. I bought one when I thought we would finally have a house, it has gone astray, when it turns up I could tell you things, but I urge you, if you belong to Costco, go there and get it. If you don't, PM me, and I could get it for you.
