"How do you close it?" Not by creating nations based on ethnic considerations.

Gustave, I think that the partition of Germany was an unfortunate event, but it was consequent upon a major war and the creation of two military blocs opposing one another. Without the "balance of terror", it would never have lasted, and it is a relief that it is over with. If I did not believe that an independent Kosovo would lead to more mischief than it is worth, I might agree with you. By the way, I think that Scottish nationalism is idiotic...

<<An independent Scotland in the midst of a err... Disunited Kingdom?! The Pandora's box containing all the nationalistic evils of Europe is wide open... How do you close it?>>

I have to agree Gustave. What Blair was thinking when he pushed localized rule I have no idea. He has singlehandedly given Scots and Welsh the instrument they have lacked to drive for independence. I would not have underestimated the independence movement in Scotland. The trend of devolution in Europe is striking, I dont think there has been this kind of seperatism and ethnic strife in Europe since before WWI. Its also enlightening to note that this level of political tribalism and Pan-slavism hasnt been as prevalent since that period either. Without the heavy hand and immanent threat of the USSR, all hell is breaking loose.
