AltiVec enhanced PowerPC prototype had seen silicon since around Q3 of 1998. Internally Motorola had planned to ship G4 processors by Q2 of 1999 (about now) but externally they've always said by Q3 of 1999. The production schedule seems to have slipped a bit. Internally now they expect G4 to ship during Q3.

When asked when G4s are expected to make it to market, Motorola folks said that they can only estimate when the chips will be shipped and were not willing to speculate when Apple will be able to ship G4 to market. The consensus was that Apple was trying to get G4 done around this Fall. While testing of AltiVec enabled "systems" has been around since at least Dec 1998 indicating that the project is moving along, it's unclear whether the overall schedule has been pushed back or not. I think what Apple likes to do is be a bit conservative in its guidance of when G4 will make it to the market. Too much build-up of anticipation for "the next big thing" product has a tendency to cause people to put off purchases which can impact sales if the release date is pushed back.

That must be a newe announcement they made today? Cause yesterday, Jobs said he had nothing new to add about the G3.

Well, I don't know who has more credibility--an Apple spokesman or the Motorola one Eric referenced. Certainly Apple wants people to keep buying G3s to smooth out this quarter. I know there are quite a few waiting until the first G4 comes out for their next desktop, especially if it's out by October. I even decided to make due with a G3 cpu upgrade in order to put off a box purchase until 2000 to get a cheap G4. We'll see. If it will be shipping from MOT by mid-year, we'll certainly know about it soon.

Apple really did a great thing by getting the weight of the PowerBook down. I think that's the biggest selling point for people I know who were close to buying one of the current PBs but were waiting to see the new specs first. Since I haven't seen any price cuts on the old line, I think you'd have to be crazy to not want the new ones instead. 25% lighter is significant. Keeping SCSI was cool too.

Rich the G 4 "Machine" at WWDC was targeted at a market segment

Hence the scheduling quote (" the machines would ship by this time next year. ") may not apply for all PowerPC 750 G 4 .

It was not a AAPL , or Motorola G 4 "availability" announcement but a "application demo" defined thusly :
----
" The new G4 chip, developed by Motorola , will contain AltiVec technology designed for processor-intensive applications such as media and heavy-duty scientific calculations.

Apple executives demonstrated the new technology, saying the G4 would be smaller, contain more transistors (10.5 million), and use less power than the Intel Pentium III chip . "
----

In light of the above , "Machines" in the scheduling "quote" could refer and be limited to today's demonstrated machine , rather than a multi model (750) , multi manufacturer (IBM , MOT) , CPU designation .

A CPU that is expected to be installed in 4 distinct product lines over many models at different times , and further controlled by AAPL's varying market conditions .

FWIW,
Jim K.

"machines would ship by this time next year"

What that means is that the machines will ship between tomorrow and a year from now.
