Looks like 190Mhz is the limit for the V3 3000 card I got. At 200Mhz it starts to literally look like old newsreel footage as random bits of the framebuffer flake out.

Interesting thing is that raising the clock speed from 150 to 190 (26%) doesn't really raise the low end of the framerate "spectrum". i.e. I still see it drop into the teens during firefights. The high end did go up significantly though - it's now in the upper 60s. (All of these are for the 1280x960 resolution setting)

I suspect that I'm CPU limited (400Mhz P2) at the low end. Hard to know for sure though.

I'm not sure if I'm more giddy about Q3Test, the Voodoo3, or the fact that BigCharts.com was sold for $166M last week (thanks T.K.!).

Well, a good time was had by all tonight. I'm a Quake rookie (but a Duke3D junkie) but I still managed to win a round or two in there early on. Saw several 3Dfxers on there, but only recognized as such those whose aliases were obvious. I'm sure there are a lot more of ye out there.

Most importantly, though - THAT GAME MAKES WE WANT TO GO OUT AND BUY A V3! My Banshee just doesn't cut it anymore and I've only had it for half a year. :) I'm sure there are tens of thousands upon thousands of people who have Banshees or TNTs who feel similarly. Of course for me, a sound card upgrade is also a dire necessity, and while I'm at it the CPU could use to be a little faster .. ah forget it I'll just wait till the fall.

See here's where 3Dfx CAN actually undermine their own sales. I'd really like a new video card, but if Rampage is coming out in the summer I'll wait for it. If it's not coming out till XMas I'll buy a V3 3000 to tide me over until then.

Just thought I'd let you know this is by far the coolest thread on SI. Have you guys been monitoring the nVidia thread? VERY very quiet, and no camaraderie whatsoever. We should challenge them to a match - I bet they get really great framerates on all those 200MHz TNT2 Ultras that I've seen on the shelves. <snicker>
