I agree with all these effects, but don't see them as less acute because they are illegal, and perhaps the other way 'round.

Richard hit the nail on the head. These things happen whether prostitution is illegal or not. Why put people on the wrong side of the law for something that is happening even if you disapprove?

Just because these things happen (and again, causality in some cases is questionable) doesn't mean making it illegal makes it better. In many cases, it makes it worse.
If prostitution was so horrific, why is vd less of a problem in the counties of Nevada where it is legal? Why do families still exist there? Why does Las Vegas have more churches per capita than any city (true, prostitution isn't legal there, but close enough). Why do prostitutes interviewed at the major brothels CHOOSE their lifestyle, some even coming from priviliged backgrounds? Why do the brothels manage to coexist with regular businesses?

See...legality doesn't make it worse. In many ways, it makes things better, and removes certain stigmas while creating a solid consumption tax base.
