Brian,

I said that NOVL realized that their Bindery Services were not going to take them into the next generation. About 8 years ago they went through the very painful process of building a new DS base on a new foundation that will allow them to grow indefinitely. NDS was developed and it was based on X.500. In fact because of their implementation of a standard that was more based on theory and guidelines, NOVL even re-wrote a few of the X.500 rules.

This revolution for NOVL WAS VERY PAINFUL FOR THEM. I would even go as far to say that it hurt their NetWare marketshare to NT because the many loyal NetWare customers did not understand the need to change and did not want to suffer through the rough first years of NDS development and deployment (and many of us "techie" know that it was rough at times to work with the firs couple version of NDS).

They are now through this "cutting their teeth" on NDS stage. After 6 years of production code, NOVL now has a truly mature and scaleable NDS that is still evolving far past the needs of the industry (NDSv8).

This DS pain will eventually have to be experienced by MSFT and its Active Directory. Lets remember one thing Brian. The Active Directory that will eventually be released late this year or early next year is not even MSFT's revolutionary DS transition. MSFT AD is still based on DOMAINS and therefore, MSFT is still scared to take its customers through the painful revolutionary next step. BUT!! They eventually will and the longer they put it off, the more painful it will be. MSFT customers will not wait for this and will realize the NDS is there now and will ALWAYS be almost a decade ahead of MSFT in DS development and maturity.

This is the same revolution that Chrysler went through when they almost when bankrupt. But the K-Car revolutionized them and the North American industry.
