You are correct Wizard about the total mkt for phy vs atm layer. If you think of a simple network with two end stations and a switch in the middle, the phy layer is needed four times (as you exit one end station, as you enter and leave the switch and as you enter the other end station). The ATM and AAL layers are needed three and two times respectively (the ATM layer does processing and attaches/detaches the 5 byte header in all three elements and the AAL layer slices the data into and out of the 48 byte payload and sets the QoS level with the appropriate AAL level (1..5). Bottom line, PMC, VTSS, LEVL, BRCM and others have staked out a position at the phy level of various systems for the obvious reason.

BTW, if Makers' chips are in the GSR 12000, that also bolsters my point about compatibility - guess who else has chips in there? PMCS.
