Also from Wired:

A lot of corporate slogans are vaguely nauseating. Lucent's is simply true: "We make the things that make communication work." Not just make them, but also invent them. And if necessary, do the underlying science, too.

Lucent arguably inherited both the brains and much of the manufacturing muscle of its parent, the prebreakup AT&T. Its R&D division is the storied Bell Labs, modern engineering's Valhalla (birthplace of the transistor, for starters) and the kind of place bright young scientists and technology PhDs flock to.

But Lucent is also a monster manufacturer - the leading US maker of telecommunications equipment and software, from telephone systems to switching and transmission gear, from digital signal processors to wireless networks. In other words, the key ingredients for the biggest ongoing infrastructure project ever attempted: wiring the planet.

Lucent's greatest challenge is living up to the creative genius of its researchers. Making a commercial success of big ideas is always hard. But no other company has bigger and better ideas to challenge it.

I'm going to repost this little snippet every time some jackass comes on here saying that Lucent is going down the toilet. I'll sell my LU the day people stop using computers and phones. Of course Lucent will have changed the world by then anyhow....

Mark

Nortel Networks to post major carrier deal in May
Wednesday May 12, 10:33 pm Eastern Time

TORONTO, May 12 (Reuters) - Data and telecommunications company Nortel Networks Corp. (NT.TO - news) (NT - news) said on Wednesday it will unveil a big contract this month for equipment to send speech over Internet protocol (IP)-based networks.

''Shortly we'll be unveiling a very large, carrier-grade, voice over IP networking (deal),'' Nortel President David House told Reuters in an interview. He declined to identify the customer, but said the contract would be announced in May.

Nortel, one of the world's largest data transfer and telecoms equipment companies, creates technology that allows companies to quickly pipe high volumes of voice traffic over the Internet.

Nortel bought Santa Clara, Ca.-based data expert Bay Networks in a $9.1 billion deal last summer, bringing House into the company.

Nortel Chief Executive John Roth relinquished his presidential role to House, who spends most of his time in California but was in Toronto's suburbs for a Nortel staff forum on Wednesday.

On Wednesday shares in the concern rose 55 Canadian cents to C$107.25 on the Toronto stock market, edging closer to a 12-month high of C$114.
