Eric,

Well, I laid into Mr Fun more than he deserved (thanks for letting me know Jorj). The morons on this thread are like gnats - irritating, but in the big picture meaningless. I shouldn't have taken it out on Mr Fun who is not by any means a gnat.....

What many fail to realize is that CSCO has a nice hold on the data world. The old world telephony equipment companies are big, and have huge revenues which they can leverage to KEEP their customers.

Voice is migrating to data infrastructures putting more demand on these networks meaning a great need for DATA centric equipment (CSCO, ASND type stuff). Old world companies might know voice but voice is moving to data networks. Old world companies have to run like hell to simply KEEP their customers. Cisco on the other hand is now in front of a market 5 to 10 times larger than they orginally played in.... It's like a kid in a candy store. Will Cisco dominate the converged networks of tomorrow - maybe not, but they don't have to.

LU purchased ASND - a strong player in data backbones a good move, but LU still has the challenge of building a bridge to data centric multiservice networks without cutting their revenue stream. They have to tread carefully and slow acceptance of new network paradigms. Cisco on the other hand will "run like hell" to make new networks a reality. If Cisco succeeds then Old World companies might be wondering what happened. On the other hand if LU is successful in slowing acceptance then it get's VERY interesting. LU has help too.. the RBOC's tyipcally move very slow. CISCO has their own help in CLEC's, MSO's now with T, and Independents looking to change the world. If they put too much pressure on the RBOC's the RBOC's will have to move as well... or they too will be dinosaurs.

I know - unthinkable. Well, here's something to consider. Amazon.com...now in order to save their business Barnes and Noble have a web site. DELL vs CPQ and HP. Companies that can deliver a better service at a lower cost will win. New carriers MAY? unseat incumbents??? Could it actually happen???

OG

Eric - Re: LU is a great company.

Didn't used to be the case. However, I must admit that LU has really done a good job of reinventing themselves. Moreover, I have been watching some of their recent product announcements, such as a single chip IP telephone and some cool "voice over IP" chip technology. My single biggest concern about CSCO is what are they going to do to counter these moves by the people at LU? As of now, it doesn't seem to me that CSCO is doing much at the silicon level, and that would seem to be the logical next place for most of the advancements in switch and router technology to come from.

Still long CSCO, I still love this stock. But I have to say that LU sure seems like a more formidable opponent today than they were eighteen months ago.

Regards.
