Hello everyone, checking in from Interop in Vegas. Just got back from the 3COM booth and attended a presentation and was pretty impressed. It seems they are taking a major stance in wireless. Also they said that around 73% of all World wide handhelds are Palms.

And last but not least they are really stressing their relationship with Siemens.

See ya later,
Mark

I don't think the USR deal was a total waste where did Palm come from?

<< You don't go around spending billions of dollars of shareholders' money on US Robotics and then two years later announce that it's a dead investment. Usually, heads roll for those sorts of lousy decisions.>>

Doughboy - I don't think anyone would argue that USR hasn't paid off to date. However, it still could big time - in three areas. First, in the VOIP/Carrier space - COMS has heavy investments in this area and is working with a number of carriers. Second, in the migration of analog modems to cable and dsl. I think this is what EB alludes to when he says he wants to slim down from 45% to 25% in the mature businesses. If Coms is successful in getting out in front of the cable and dsl game (and their cable head end story is strong as well) you may see growth like USR had 3-4 years back (when their stock was a rocket ship). Third - the PALM could be a home run - yes it faces lot of competition and there are still issues, but not too many companies have the opportunity to lead and dominate an exciting growth sector like handhelds. COMS has this opportunity - they may as well go for it.

What you've seen to date from USR may look like a bunch of coal, but there are substantial potential diamonds out there, and the polishing of these diamonds is further along that one might realize.

COMS legacy biz is still good - their enterprise product portfolio is stronger than ever and they are beginning to execute on their converged networks strategy - to date ahead of Nortel and Lu, and on probably equal pace with CSCO.
