I think we're hung on terminology. Chuzz and I (Me for sure, Chuzz I presume, and maybe E as well) Are thinking in terms of number theory. The underlying principles of arithmetic, which are invariant regardless of how you shuffle the labels. Sure, in base three "four" becomes a double-digit number. Triple-digit in base 2! But it's still ... four.
To use your language, we're looking at the number four, not the term 4.
