Tippet, yes I was surprised by the fact that the purchase of a house is a one shot hit to savings by increasing the consumption component. I am under the impression that 401 k money is included in the savings rate but cannot say for sure. The article points out some serious problems with the savings rate but notes that the method is consisitent over time so THE STEADY DECLINE does tell us something. The record high debt as a % of disposible income suggests to me that savings are low. it is worth noting that auto leases are NOT included in the debt figures. HO HO HO Mike
