MSFT reported to be considering major stake(30%) in British telecom giant Cable & Wireless... Would give MSFT stakes
in 3 top British cable firms... Microsoft already owns 5 percent of NTL Inc.
(NTLI) and is picking up a 29.9 percent stake in Telewest Communications
(TWSTY) through its MediaOne (UMG)/AT&T (T) deal... Acquisition
would run spend-happy MSFT about $4 bln, bringing total of recent deals to
about $10 bln... One the one end, MSFT's strategy bullish in that company
buying access for Windows CE... On the other, is company sending message
that it sees cable industry offering better long-term return that MSFT itself? By Briefing.com
