Tell me this. In the base ten system we use, what is the single, separate digit for the number after nine? Not expressed as 10 (one tens plus one holding place zero) but expressed as a single independent stand alone digit? It's a question you can't address, because by definition it is a meaningless question. In base 10, you simply don't have a single digit for the number after 9. Similarly, in the base three system the very idea of 4 is nonsensical. That's a hard concept to grasp because we are so accustomed to our nine digits plus zero--they are almost hardwired into us from birth--that it is hard to think outside their box. But if you do, you will see that in a base 3 world (if we had used our whole hands instead of our fingers to count on) the very thought of 4 as a separate digit not expressed in terms of 11 would be as unintelligible as a single digit for 10 would be to you.
