Your description of Clinton's philosophy is just a description of the sociopathic personality...
The main domestic import of the Reagan years was the relative deregulation of the economy, and the easing of various tax disincentives. Our economy was not depressed, it soared. We had a mild, short lived recession in the last year of the Bush Administration. The recession that started at the beginning of the Reagan Administration was a result of Carter policies and squeezing out inflation, which has remained unusually low. Once Reagan policies had a chance to kick in, prosperity ruled. The fact that it wasn't just the military build- up is demonstrated by the continuation of prosperity after a short bump in the road after the draw down began. Since no one but Reagan thought that we would win the Cold War in our lifetimes, and liberal opinion expected our relationship with the Soviet Union to worsen, and the hardliners to be strengthened by Reagan's bellicosity, I think it is fair to say that Reagan knew what he was doing and they didn't....
