OK, I shan't discuss prime numbers anymore. Well sort of not anyway. It so happens that today Berkely has finally released the SETI screen saver. Now it is possible for anybody that cares to, to become part of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.

It seems that Dr. Horowitz has gotten so good at designing equipment that collects data from radio telescopes that there is too much data for their computers to process. It occurred to them that volunteers could download big chunks of data to analyze on their home computers when their processors aren't busy, which is most of the time, and send the results back to Berkely, and get a new chunk of data. It all runs in the background, and you won't know it if you don't want to. No math is necessary!

The program automatically looks for patterns in the data, which would presumably be from an intelligent source. I have mine running for the first time today. I swear that I am seeing patterns that, to me, are starting to look like rows of bananas.

Check it out. setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu
