Domestic Rig Count Up by 2
Friday May 14, 2:16 pm Eastern Time
HOUSTON (AP) -- The number of rigs actively exploring for oil and natural gas in the United States rose by two Friday to 507, the second time the count has moved above 500 for in six weeks.

Of the rigs running nationwide this week, 142 were exploring for oil and 365 for gas, Houston-based Baker Hughes Inc. reported. During the same week last year, 876 rigs were operating in the United States.

Baker Hughes has kept track of the count since 1944. The tally peaked at 4,530 on Dec. 28, 1981, during the height of the oil boom, but has set record lows in nine of the last 17 weeks. The latest was 498 on April 9.

Despite recent gains, weak oil and gas prices over the past year are to blame for the lack of drilling activity.

Baker Hughes says there probably are fewer domestic rigs looking for oil and gas now than at any time since industry's emerging days of the early 1900s.

Of the major oil- and gas-producing states, Wyoming gained five rigs and Louisiana added two.

Oklahoma lost four, Texas fell by three and California slipped by one.

Alaska and New Mexico were unchanged.
