PB, Re: Smartmoney Article: Does Intel Want To Be The Next Cisco?

I am kind of in agreement with the article in that software is the
key. Who would give up IOS from Cisco for something completely
new especially we are talking about backbone here ? Too risky for
the customers. It would be a tough battle for Intel.

RE: "Instead, however, Intel is...offering what amounts to a microprocessor for wide area networks... that seems tailor-made for a fairly complex processor like the kind Intel is great at building.

It may also be one of the first places where vendors try out a much-touted technology called voice-over-IP... As such, these boxes increasingly must ensure so-called quality of service, making data seem as reliable as the phone network.

To do all that, Intel is in effect hoping to build a microcomputer for networks, a big, complex, general-purpose chip that can be slipped inside any number of networking boxes built by equipment makers."

Process Boy, the comment on voice-IP is interesting.

RE: "Level One wants to do that kind of integration as well, but it's going to be harder for them; Broadcom is better positioned because they've focused on digital signal processing for their transceivers from day one."

Thread, your thoughts?

RE: "Does Intel Want To Be The Next Cisco?"

Gary, I'll take Cisco's PE any day for INTC. :)

I was of the impression Intel competes with 3COM in the sub-market, and will supply components to Cisco in the high-end market. However, the article's title contradicts this, yet, the content of the article stated Intel would supply the components for these WAN products (which read to me, "Intel will be the component supplier to Cisco"), so I am curious.

PB,

From what I've heard, I would not be certain that my
brethren over in the Networking and Communications Group
do not already "live, eat, and breath" this stuff.

I think you're saying that your brethren do "live, eat, and breath" this stuff, right? Is that a double negative? I had to read it twice, but that may be the effect of my breathing too much silicon dust. Actually, to refute any Silicon Valley detractors, the air is cleaner here according to particular ppm articles I've read than it was 25 years ago. I digress. Back to the net and comm stuff, to borrow a famous motto from Yousef, tell those guys to "make it so."
